Things Remembered & Things Forgotten

Gaps in memory, and dissociative amnesia, the lingering effects of CPTSD. Even after years of healing, the struggle with memory and cognitive function can linger and cause significant impact on daily life. It’s possible to work on processing and reactions so that triggers have less of an impact. Time passing creates a physical distance between the present moment and traumatic moments, easing the effect of emotional response. Even with all the progress of healing, a faltering memory causes distress.

It’s been said that healing is not linear. Sometimes the upswing of progress gets interrupted by a spiral that feels like falling backwards. A rough moment can disappear into full confidence that feels like being “back on track” and so the cycle becomes more like a tornado- twisting and turning, with sudden changes in direction, some beauty and awe, some devastating destruction. The truth is, healing becomes a new state of being, with its own complex state of mind, and the need to adapt to life in unique ways.

There have been moments in my own life where I have longed for a resolution. I have hoped that healing would have an ending that might transport me to a new state of being that looks much more like an old state of being before the trauma. Yet, a lived experience cannot be erased. Who I am today is assembled from all of my experiences; my failures, my successes, the residual emotions that remind me what those moments felt like, and the calculations that come out of knowing all that I now know because of those experiences. The good, the bad, and the ugly are better off owned rather than avoided so that I can completely understand who I am and where I am going.

Understanding the potential to use my experiences to become a better version of myself today means I have the power to dictate what any event or emotion means for me in the here and now. My power and control lie in what I do with what has happened to me rather than passively avoiding the truth of my past. I am at the point in my own healing that I am empowered, confident, and actively seeking growth. So, I can say from experience, there is hope. To anyone who is reeling in a fresh wound, facing the reality of pain and grief, know that you won’t live there forever.

Don’t Blink

It seems like not very long ago that I was writing a wrap up to 2023. Now, seemingly suddenly, it’s nearing the end of the first week of March. I’ve thought about writing while in the car, or in the shower, or in the grocery store. Some of my best ideas show up in the midst of busy little necessities of life. Travis Tritt said it so well, “It was all with the best of intentions.” The older I get, the more that good intentions float on by and life continues to speed up.

I have a goal to get a lot of ideas out of my head and into writing. Here is the first page, just some sweet ramblings. It’s been awhile since I wrote, so how are you doing? Are your goals coming along? I would LOVE for you to respond to this and tell me a little about your ambitions for 2024. Even just to say that you’re still taking one step at a time, because any movement forward is progress.

Changing Seasons

Happy Autumn Blessings! This is absolutely my favorite time of the year, for many reasons. I love the cooler weather and the beautiful colors of nature. For me, this is a slow down time every year. The busyness of summer has fizzled out and the bustle of the holiday season hasn’t quite taken off. It is an atmosphere of peace and contentment.

This year in particular, I am welcoming the slow-down of October. There has been a lot going on! We purchased our forever home and did a complete renovation of this little farmhouse. (It’s still a work in progress.) I expanded my business and now have a local studio location for Bodywork. (Have you checked out that tab yet?) I headed many community projects as I’ve been absorbing myself in the local rural area where we’ve chosen to settle down. Including starting a digital newspaper, which is in large part why my blog has been so quiet all summer. Writing and editing a newspaper takes a chunk of time each week! I also birthed another dream as a branch of my business in Whole Well Women and we just wrapped up the completion of our first ever women’s conference!

To say the least, I’ve been busy. I don’t recommend doing everything you possibly can in life all at once. It’s exhausting! I am ambitious and I took the bargain of a season of hustle to bring me to the point where I can hopefully step back and nurture these things with much less stress. I am incredibly proud of myself for pulling through this year. I know, it isn’t over yet. I still have a book to publish that took a back seat for a while and I am returning to my commitment of regular publishing here. This serves as an update to catch you up on all that’s been pulling me away and let you know, I’m back!

So much more is coming soon! If you haven’t heard it lately, let me remind you- pursue your passions! Create your dreams and show up for your life- the one you really want.
